EVIDENCE BASED: RESEARCH FINDINGS; what should happen is the explicit teaching of reading in Years P-3 with a method of Phonological Awareness and Synthetic Phonics.  This provides the  literacy foundation moving forward. BUT what if it doesn't work?

"We are seeing a failure of reading progression from Year 5 that when the students arrive in Year 9 they have seemingly stagnated with many students still back at their Year 5 level. We are unsure why?" 


I can tell you why! It has to do with neurological neccesary/sufficiency. Aphasia studies (loss of speech following brain injury and its rehabilitation - faculty Speech Pathology) demonstrate that dosage frequency impacts on the brains ability to attain a 'sufficiency' that enables spontaneous ongoing growth.  I hypothesise that 'the shift in societal use of 'screens'  is resulting in insufficient practise to adequately bed in the skill of reading to the sufficient level  that is referred to as 'automaticity'.'

UNIQUE solutions are now needed to counter this shift. Performance of early reading instruction by our primary schools is demonstrated to be competent as is reinforced by the year 5 Naplan data.


Rather than levelling blame towards the higher education levels or vice versa, if we as a society wish to have both a liberal attitude towards the choice of a 'screen savvy' youth  and also a highly literate one, then we must seek to counter the deleterious effects  of screen time through innovative solutions
